On Friday Mensur started well in Dublin, where he beat his first opponent Yordi Meeuwisse 6-3 going into the next round with loads of confident against Paul Nicholson and don't giving him much chance with a 6-1 win. Ronny Huybrechts, his next opponent didn't even get a leg at the board and Mensur won 6-3 into the last 16 where he sensationally hit a nine-dart leg against Ryan Searle and won the game 6-5 to move into the last 8 where young Dutch player Jimmy Hendriks batteled him all way long but Mensur could make his way into the semi-final with a 6-4 victory where he met Rob Cross who was unstopable and played a 109 average against Mensur who only had one dart at a double to seal off a 161 checkout and lost 1-6.
But Fridays disappointment of losing the semi-final did not influence Mensurs form on the Saturday in Players Championship 20.
His first round win over young player Ted Evetts with 6-0 was only the beginning. In the second round Richie Corner got beaten 6-2 while in the last 32 Justin Pipe did not give the game away easily and Mensur had to win the deciding leg to edge into the next round where Alan Norris was waiting for him and who couldn't do much against Mensurs form. By winning this game 6-1 Mensurs next opponent was Michael van Gerwen, World Champion, World number 1, but even he could not stop The Gentle on his run and got beaten 6-3. In the Semifinal Mensur met his BULLS team colleague James Wilson who also had a very good run that day but Mensur was the stronger player and by winning 6-4 he edged into the final where Stephen Bunting was waiting for him. Mensur started slow and Stephen got a lead of 3-0 but never underestimate Suljovic, he got himself together and threw some proper darts to win his first Players Championship title 6-4.
As an outsider Mensur started in Cardiff in his group. The bookies traded him with 1/67 for winning the tournament. And thats just what he did. In his group with Gary Anderson, Peter Wright and Dave Chisnall he won every single game to lead the table for going into the semi finals. There he met Raymond van Barneveld, who finished his group second. Both, Raymond and Mensur played a very good game but with a 160 checkout Mensur finished the semis in the pre-last leg 11-9. What followed was his second game against Gary Anderson this weekened, who he beat in his first game on Saturday. The final was a revival of it and Gary did not want to lose again. But Mensur played strong, did not lose his nerv and after Gary missing 3 darts for the leg Mensur stood back, took a breath and won the title Champion of the Champions League of Darts by hitting his favourite double 14. Never have we seen a happier winner.
Born on the 5th of March 1972 in Tutin, Serbia, Mensur moved to Vienna, Austria during the war in 1995. He joined his brothers, who then already run cafes and pubs. Thats where it all begun, when Mensur was asked to play soft tip with the other guests. Somehow he didn't do too bad and his brother was surprised and could not believed that he's not played before. Mensur still is the most popular and successful soft tip player in Austria and probably all over the world. He won every title he played for in singles, doubles and team events. But he wanted more and with the help of his sponsors he started his way into the PDC in 2011. It has not always been easy and the way from soft tip superstar to steel tip pro was hard. 2014 was a crucial year for Mensur and he almost finished his career. Luckily friends and family made him believe in himself again and he started an upwards ride to where he is now, a TV tournament winner and world number 7.
Mensur has been using BULLS darts from the beginning of his career.
